Our Humble Beginnings
The Mantaray® story begins in 1992 on the beautiful Devon coast in South West England. Our founder was inspired by the laidback surf culture and wanted to design clothes that embodied this easygoing lifestyle.
The first Mantaray® collection focused on T-shirts, shorts and swimwear featuring bold prints and colors that evoked summertime vibes. The relaxed silhouette and focus on natural fabrics like cotton and linen perfectly captured the essence of coastal living.
Word soon spread about these wearable pieces that made you feel like you were on permanent vacation. Mantaray® quickly gained a cult following among people who appreciated our philosophy of fashion over fads.

Mantasting – Our Design Process
The path from initial concept to finished product is an in-depth process we call “Mantasting.” Here’s a look at what’s involved in creating each new Mantaray® collection:
Inspiration Trips
Our designers scour the globe gathering ideas to influence the upcoming seasonal collections. From scenic coastal destinations to lively urban hotspots, these trips get our creative juices flowing. We capture everything from natural textures and color palettes to interesting silhouettes we’d like to recreate. These inspirational references help spark our imagination and serve as the springboard for new collections.
Concept Development
Back in our UK design studio, we comb through our inspiration to identify themes, prints, colors and silhouettes for the new collection. Different categories like dresses and pants each get unique creative direction that still feels cohesive. We sketch initial concepts and refine the details that will make each piece distinctly Mantaray®.
Fabric Sourcing
Next we source the perfect fabrics to bring our designs to life. We pick textiles that balance beauty, comfort and responsibility. Most come from natural sources like cotton, lyocell and linen. We love experimenting with different weaves, prints and distressing techniques to create fresh fabric stories season after season.
Fit Sampling
An extensive sampling process ensures garments have the perfect drape, shape and structure. Initial prototypes are assessed on diverse models to guarantee universal flattery and fit. We evaluate the weight, stretch, opacity and more before finalizing fabrics. Nothing goes into production before nailing these fine details.
Responsible Production
Once samples are approved, garments go into production at our network of audited facilities. We work closely with vendors to ensure efficient manufacturing without compromising quality or ethics. During production we evaluate pieces like embroidery and wash treatments that give each garment its special touches.
Quality Assurance
Before shipping, all garments undergo thorough quality checks. We scrutinize details like seams, hems and embellishments to catch any defects. Our QA team ensures colors and prints are crisp and consistent. We also pre-wash select garments for unbeatable softness right out of the package.
